the gun culture that we are. jeff toobin is cnn legal analyst and christian am pan pour is also here, abc's global affairs anchor. this is rooted in the second amendment, jeff. you say it will be determined as much by politics as by law. is gun culture driving politics, politics driving gn culture? does it change? does the second amendment change from here? >> it sure does. the second amendment itself has not changed more than 200 years. but the interpretation of the second amendment has changed dramatically. for more than 100 years, the interpretation was that state militias, that mysterious first clause, they were the only ones who had the right to bear and keep arms. in 2008 the supreme court of the united states said individuals have a right to keep and bear arms. they were talking about handguns in the home. how expansive that right is remains somewhat murky at this point. the idea that you have a constitutional right to bear arms is a legitimate one for better or worse now. that's something that politicians will have to take into consideration as they decide what to do. >> you've po

police say a driver ran into the group. jeff bush is live. >> reporter: wean just a little bit about -- we know just a little bit about this incident. to my right is the twin peaks overlook, where you can see san francisco from twin peaks. a driver hit four people, knocking one of them 30 feet down this steep ravine. the fire department had to rescue that person. she went to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. a suspect was arrested a short time after, not too far away from this situation. four people were in that vehicle. we're not sure if drugs or alcohol were involved. but there has been an arrest. four people were hit. two people with nonlife-threatening injuries, two people with life-threatening injuries. more on this story as we get more developments. live in san francisco, kron4 news. >>> major charge s underway in curry village at yosemite national park where the hantavirus outbreak started in the summer. >> 10 people got sick from the hantavirus. three eventually died. park officials decided to demolish some of the tent cabins where it's believed the victims were i

answered. let's get to doctor jeff gardere. he has been talking a lot about what answers parents need to be giving their children. he's a clinical psychologist. so, jeff, i did that interview with the -- those parents a little bit earlier today. and they were struggling. they literally did not know the words to use to be able to tell their first grade son that some of his classmates and his good friends had been killed. how do people who are in the situation handle this? how do those of us who are outside of it and have children that are dealing with it handle it as well? >> well, i heard what they said, and it was very poignant. they had listened to the experts such as myself giving advice. if you have children who have heard about this, how to speak with them. this is a very special population. they're the ones that are at the ground zero who have been traumatized. and i would tell those parents, and this is specifically for you there in connecticut, as part of sandy hook. the most important thing is let your children know that you, as the parents, have been very hurt by this. and t

city of kansas in my home state. officer jeff athalate fatally shot while on duty, investigating drug activity occurring inside a vehicle outside a neighborhood grocery store. as they approached the vehicle and orbded the okay -- ordered the occupants to get out the gunmen took the lives of both officers. when we lose someone in a community in kansas, it's not just a name. it's somebody we go to church with. it's somebody we know and care about. these individuals are that to their friends and family in topeka and across our state. david had been part of the topeka police department for 21 years. he spent 13 years as a reserve officer and 8 years as a full-time officer. his service tkphot begin as a police officer. he served in the kansas national guard and recently retired. police chief ronald miller described david as someone who served his life to his country and to the city of tow pea kafplt david's service was a model to others including his son brandon who followed his dad's footsteps and served the topeka community as a police officer himself. the second officer -- jeff -- was 2

up to a foot and a half of snow. jeff berardelli has the details. >>> our big east coast storm will continue throughout the day today but gradually winding down as we go into the afternoon and evening. things have been improving from south to north throughout the day, but the coastal areas are still receiving very heavy rain but the emphasis for snow will be further inland especially upstate new york and northern interior new england and eventually maine is going to be getting in on the act as well. that's where the winter storm warnings are in effect. and a notice they are not in effect along the i-95 corridor. again, that's where we're expecting it to mostly be in the form of rain like it has been throughout most of the day. additional snow as we go through the next 24 hours. you could see 12 inches or more where some of those areas are in purple, but, again, along the coast, we're talking 1 inch or less and this time around, again, it looks like it's mainly going to be just rain. i'm david bernard for cbs news, miami. >>> at least six deaths are blamed on the storm system in

, i think about my son. and i wonder if someday i'll be that mom. >> i am joined by jeff grenier, licensed clinical psychologist. she thinks that her own child in some way could commit the kind of crime that we saw from this young man, adam lanza, last week. what kind of help is there for her and for other parents who are afraid in some ways of their mentally ill children? >> well, it's a very tough terrain, suzanne, for many of these parents. i work with them every single day. they have children who are on the onset of schizophrenia or a very serious personality disorder such as a schizo type where we don't have the hallucinations but we do have the magical thinking and isolation and sometimes some naked aggression. and what happens is because at the time they may not be a danger to themselves or others, you can't get them involuntarily committed, especially if they are of age. and if you are able to get them into the emergency room and admitted by a psychiatrist because there isn't a lot of bed space, within two or three days, they are discharged, on medications, but the medica

the help of a clinical psychologist. jeff gardere is here. jeff, i don't even know where to begin with this. with the community dealing with 26 people, with 20 children, with families dealing with this, parents who sent their kids to school, went off to work or off to do whatever they were doing, getting ready for the holidays, maybe they were well, i just tho be very honest with ourselves that many of us feel like you, don. we don't know where to begin. but there is a place and that is what the police are doing and the mobile crisis units are doing now which is providing debriefing to not just get information but to allow these families to allow the parents, to allows the friends to just be able to talk about what they're experiencing. allowing them to ease into this grieving process that's going to be taking such a long time for them to get through, but most importantly, to help stabilize them, making sure that they get information that they get food, that they get warmth, that they get support and that they have an open communication, shoulders that are available for them to cry on to le
